Description

The Gravisi–Buttorai Palace is a prominent example of Baroque architecture in Koper. It was built in 1664 along the then Via degli Orti Grandi Street (today Osvobodilne Fronte Street), which was being developed at that time during the Baroque period. The main portal on the façade of the palace certainly stands out. Above it there is a representative Baroque balcony and an ornate family coat of arms. They wanted to build a right wing to the palace, but the project remained unimplemented. The renovated building has 731 square metres of covered area and a large courtyard, where the palace garden used to be. It is home to the Self-Governing Community of Italian Nationality in Koper, the local Community of Italians “Santorio Santorio,” the sports association “ASCI,” and the Society for Historical Research.
