Description

Santorio Santori (1561–1636) was a physician, inventor, and the “father of experimental medicine,” whose fame reached far beyond the borders of the Venetian Republic. The historical itinerary “Santorio” leads travelers from Santorio’s birthplace, Koper—where he spent his childhood—to Venice, where he received his early education and forged lifelong friendships, then on to Padua, where he successfully completed his medical studies and later returned as a lecturer, and finally to Spilimbergo, the hometown of his father, who had been assigned a new post there in 1548, bringing him to then-Venetian Koper, where he founded his family. Along the way, visitors discover Santorio’s life story, which also serves as a starting point for exploring some lesser-known sites in the cross-border area.
